WTA Personnel Could Be Deposed As Part Of Bouchard's Lawsuit Against USTA

WTA Tour personnel may be deposed as part of the lawsuit brought against the USTA by Canadian player Eugenie Bouchard. The No. 40-ranked Bouchard is suing the USTA for a concussion she suffered during last year’s U.S. Open when she slipped in an allegedly dimly lit and unattended area of the locker room. Among the staff that would have been in that area included part-time USTA employees and WTA employees. “We have a Services Agreement with the Grand Slams which provides for the employment by the Grand Slams of WTA primary health care providers (aka trainers), referred to as PHCPs,” WTA Senior VP/Communications Heather Bowler wrote in an email. “The PHCPs are part of the Grand Slam's player medical services team and work under the direction of the Tournament Physician for the duration of the Grand Slam. This arrangement provides a continuity of care for the players on the Tour. It's our understanding that those PHCPs who were working at the US Open on the night in question may be deposed.” Benedict Morelli, Bouchard’s attorney, said he has a list of the staff working the area, but until he deposes them, he cannot say who was responsible for the conditions he alleges led to the accident. This comes as the USTA has criticized Bouchard for focusing on her lawsuit against the group and not on “playing to her best ability.”
