NFL Forms New Chairmen's Committee Consisting Of Owners Acting As Goodell Advisers

The NFL has formed the Chairman's Committee to "handle strategies and priorities for the league," according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. The new committee will be composed of the Chiefs' Clark Hunt, Patriots' Robert Kraft, Steelers' Art Rooney II, Texans' Bob McNair and Giants' John Mara (ESPN.com, 8/25). In DC, Mark Maske reports the group consists of team owners "who are among the closest advisers" to Commissioner Roger Goodell. The committee also "consists of the chairmen of other league committees: the finance, international, media, stadium and Management Council Executive committees." Maske notes Goodell had "worked with the group of committee chairmen on an informal basis in recent years," but now it "is an official committee." The group is "believed to assist Goodell in identifying the NFL's top priorities and helping to ensure key issues are coordinated among the committees and properly considered by the owners." The new committee is "not expected to take any formal votes." Kraft's "presence on the committee is particularly significant" given that his relationship with Goodell has been "tested" by Deflategate (WASHINGTON POST, 8/26).

JOIN US, WON'T YOU? In Nashville, Jason Wolf reports Titans Controlling Owner Amy Adams Strunk had been named to the NFL's HOF Committee, joining the Browns' Jimmy Haslam, Bears' George McCaskey, Steelers' Dan Rooney, Redskins' Dan Snyder, 49ers' Denise DeBartolo-York and Cowboys' Jerry Jones, who serves as Chair. Late Titans Owner Bud Adams "was a longtime member of the committee," which "serves as the liaison between NFL owners" and the Pro Football HOF. The committee "does not factor into the selection of members" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 8/26). Meanwhile, in Jacksonville, Phillip Heilman reported Jaguars Owner Shad Khan had been named Chair of the league's Business Ventures Committee, which has "oversight on league commercial activities, including consumer products, sponsorship, events, marketing and new business initiatives." Khan also is "joining the NFL Network Committee and will continue to serve on the Finance and Health/Safety committees." He will "no longer be on the NFL Foundation and Investment committees" (JACKSONVILLE.com, 8/25).

FAMILIAR FACE: ESPN.com's Schefter cited a source as saying that former NFL coach Tom Coughlin has been "added to the NFL's competition committee," joining other recent appointees Cardinals coach Bruce Arians and Broncos Exec VP/Football Operations & GM John Elway. It appears as if Rams coach Jeff Fisher is the "only member of the committee from last season who has stepped aside, and the rest of the competition committee remains intact, for now" (ESPN.com, 8/25).
