League Notes

In San Diego, Don Norcross notes the World TeamTennis Championship will be held Friday in N.Y. between the San Diego Aviators and the Orange County Breakers. The WTT is "but a blip on the sports landscape," as it "doesn’t merit mention on the ESPN scrawl and few words in major newspapers." However, WTT co-Founder Billie Jean King "is proud the league is completing its 41st straight season." She said, "At least we’re still going. A lot of people come and go" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/26).

HOLD YOUR HORSES: In New Jersey, Bob Klapisch writes MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred should not "be tempted by a 20-second clock for the pitcher." There is "nothing wrong with trimming away the fat from a three-hour game; limiting between-innings clutter is smart and prudent." But baseball is a sport that "emphasizes focus and concentration." Twenty seconds "isn’t always enough time to sort through a catcher’s signals, get a proper grip on the ball and begin a sure and balanced windup" (Bergen RECORD, 8/26).

SHOTS FIRED: Eagles OT Lane Johnson, who faces a 10-game suspension for PEDs, said that he "is planning to take legal action against the company that provided him with the amino acid." Johnson: "Going after them. I have people on it to get it done.” CSNPHILLY.com's Reuben Frank noted Johnson "declined to identify the company that supplied him with the supplement." Johnson said, "I don’t want to have to go through this again. Unless something changes, the policy, I don’t trust anything" (CSNPHILLY.com, 8/24).
