Facility Notes

USTA Managing Dir of Communications Chris Widmaier said that Arthur Ashe Stadium's new $150M retractable roof "will be closed to start" the U.S. Open's opening-night ceremonies on Monday, then will "open to darkening skies as Phil Collins performs." In N.Y., Marc Berman writes it is a "symbolic way to usher in the Open's roof era" (N.Y. POST, 8/26).

NOT THIS TIME: In Charlotte, Katherine Peralta in a front-page piece reports Panthers fans are "losing the biggest and most prominent tailgating spot in front of Bank of America Stadium." Preferred Parking GM Ben Sands said that there are "nearly 500 fewer parking spots at which to tailgate before games this season." Development around Charlotte has been "gradually shrinking the overall parking footprint, meaning game-day revelers are moving farther away from Bank of America Stadium or paying more for the remaining spots close to the stadium" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/26).

WEATHER WATCH
: In West Palm Beach, Joe Capozzi noted the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches is "still a massive work in progress" five months from its scheduled opening. Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelley Vana, after taking a 30-minute tour of the site, said that she was confident the $144M facility which will house Spring Training for the Astros and Nationals "will open in January." The teams are "closely watching the tropical weather systems approaching Florida over the final three months of hurricane season." Hunt Construction Group GM Doug Utt said that "even if a tropical storm struck West Palm Beach, the teams should finish on time" (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 8/24).

GOT THE APPROVAL: Univ. of Houston AD Hunter Yurachek said that "construction on an indoor football practice facility will begin after the upcoming season." The UH Board of Regents on Thursday "gave the OK to move ahead" with the $20M project with completion expected before the '17 season. The indoor facility will "be 80,000 square feet and include a 120-yard synthetic field and football-only sports performance area." It will be "built in the current RV lot adjacent to TDECU Stadium" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/26).
