People & Personalities: SNY Mets Trio "At Their Best" When Talking Non-Baseball Points

The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Andrew Beaton noted SNY's Mets broadcast trio of play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen and analysts Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling is "widely acknowledged as one of the best in baseball," but they are "at their best when ... they're not talking about baseball." During their 11 years on air together, the trio has "mastered the art of the tangent." The key to their "off-topic musings may be their wildly different personalities." Cohen has been "calling games for decades and has a seemingly photographic memory of baseball history." SNY Senior VP/Production & Exec Producer Curt Gowdy Jr. said fans "get to feel their analysis of not only the game but also the whimsical things that go on in life" (WSJ.com, 8/23).

DON'T STOP NOW: NEWSDAY's Jim Baumbach noted Yankees radio announcer John Sterling has "called 4,453 consecutive Yankees games on the radio," a streak that "spans 28 baseball seasons and has remained intact through the birth of four children, bouts with food poisoning and countless colds." A Yankees announcer since '89, Sterling "has his well-documented quirks" and his casual style "draws criticism from some, but those whose opinions matter the most -- the highest-ranking Yankees executives -- remain big Sterling fans." Yankees President Randy Levine said, "John is the Lou Gehrig of radio. A great Yankee Hall of Famer." Sterling, who "declines to reveal his age but is believed to be about 78, plans to keep going as long as the Yankees will let him" (NEWSDAY, 8/21).

MOVING ON EAST: NESN has named K.C.-based KSHB-NBC reporter Kacie McDonnell sports anchor and reporter. McDonnell, who will "join the network in September, will appear on 'NESN Sports Today,' 'NESN Live,' and 'NESN Sports Update,' the network's three main news programs." McDonnell was also a pre- and postgame host for Sporting KC games on KMCI-Ind. (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 8/22).

NOTES
: Northwestern Univ. has hired ESPN's J.A. Adande to "serve as the director of its new sports journalism program" at the Medill School (SI.com, 8/22)....The Detroit Free Press named Lansing State Journal reporter Chris Solari its Michigan State beat writer. Solari replaces Joe Rexrode, who "left in April to be a sports columnist" for the Nashville Tennessean (FREEP.com, 8/22)....Former NFLer Reggie Wayne has "recently joined NFL Network" as an analyst (INDYSTAR.com, 8/23).
