Olympic Names In The News: Ryan Lochte To Remain In Charity Swimming Event

A Central Florida YMCA will "proceed as planned with a charity swimming event featuring RYAN LOCHTE despite his fabrication of an armed robbery" in Rio last week. Volusia Flagler Family YMCA and the Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation BOD yesterday "agreed to continue with plans for the 'Rematch After Rio.'" Lochte, a Florida native, will race former national lifeguard champion CHARLIE LYDECKER at 6:30pm ET on Sept. 28. NBC swimming analyst ROWDY GAINES will provide commentary (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 8/24).

OTTER BLOCKED: Indiana Univ.'s compliance office "nixed" a promotional appearance set to be made by Gold Medal-winning swimmer and IU student-athlete LILLY KING at an Independent Frontier League Evansville Otters game. The Otters "sent out a news release stating the swimmer would sign autographs Friday at Bosse Field." But IU swim coach RAY LOOZE said that King "had been told she can't make promotional appearances." Otters Operations Manager ANDREA WALLACE said, "We are working with IU compliance. We had done our homework, thought everything had been approved and then found out that it was not" (Evansville COURIER & PRESS, 8/24).

MAKING GOOD: Team USA F ELENA DELLE DONNE "turned the U.S women's basketball team's gold medal win over Spain on Saturday into a win for babies born on that same day by gifting newborns" at Christiana Hospital in Delaware miniature green, Nike Waffle 1 sneakers. Delle Donne, Delaware's "first Summer Olympic gold medalist in 16 years, promised to donate the kicks if her team took the gold." Delle Donne was "born at Christiana Hospital" (DELAWAREONLINE.com, 8/22).

TAKE A BOW: Gold Medal-winning U.S. gymnasts SIMONE BILES, ALY RAISMAN, GABBY DOUGLAS, MADISON KOCIAN and LAURIE HERNANDEZ yesterday attended the musical "HAMILTON" in N.Y. They also "greeted the cast onstage afterward at the Richard Rodgers Theatre" (AP, 8/24). The five gymnasts also were guests on last night’s edition of NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” They joined host JIMMY FALLON and actor DONALD GLOVER in a game of “Hungry, Hungry Humans,” a life-sized version of the children’s game “Hungry, Hungry Hippos” ("The Tonight Show," NBC, 8/23).

SWIMMER'S SPIN: Gold Medal-winning U.S. swimmer KATIE LEDECKY, a Maryland native, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at tonight's Orioles-Nationals game (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer). This will be the third time Ledecky "will do the honors for the Nationals." The team "invited Ledecky to toss the ceremonial first pitch" in '12 and then "again ahead of the team's first postseason game against" the Giants in '14 (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 8/23).
