Marlins Park To Host '17 Race Of Champions Motorsports Event; First Time Contested In U.S.

Organizers from the Race of Champions, an international motorsports event, yesterday announced that the Jan. 21-22 race will be held at Marlins Park, "marking the first time it will be contested at a venue" in the U.S., according to Craig Davis of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. The race will "cast an international spotlight on the home of the Marlins, which will also be the site" of the '17 MLB All-Star Game. Marlins Park Exec VP/Operations & Events Claude Delorme said, "When they first approached us and said, 'We want to convert the field to a race track,' I definitely looked at them and said, are you serious? The more we started looking at it, we became very intrigued." Davis notes the tournament format features "top drivers from various professional circuits," and each race will take place "on a figure 8-shaped course and last about 90 seconds." Seven "different types of cars will be used, and each driver [will] race in several different cars." Previous venues included Wembley Stadium, the Beijing National Stadium and Stade de France (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 8/24). In Miami, Elliott Lapin notes NASCAR's Kurt Busch, IndyCar's Ryan Hunter-Reay and F1's Sebastian Vettel -- the '15 Race of Champions winner -- "will be among the drivers to compete in this event." They are the "only drivers who have been announced so far" (MIAMI HERALD, 8/24).
