NHL To Use Sportradar's Programs To Monitor Global Gaming, Irregular Betting Patterns

The NHL has signed a multiyear deal with Sportradar to use the company’s Fraud Detection System to monitor global gaming activity and identify irregular betting patterns. The agreement adds to a separate, five-year agreement Sportradar signed last September to be the NHL’s exclusive third-party data distributor. Sportradar has actively sought to grow its integrity-services business as a supplement to its core data operations, and the NHL joins MLS as key U.S.-based clients for that segment. “No sport is immune against the cancerous threat of match fixing and this is an important step the NHL has taken,” said Sportradar Managing Dir of Integrity Services Andreas Krannich. The deal has been in the works for nearly a year, as talks began soon after the core data agreement was signed. The move to use Sportradar’s Fraud Detection System predates the NHL’s decision in June to expand to Las Vegas. The NHL had previously used other gambling monitoring services prior to the retention of Sportradar. “This is really a safety net for us to monitor what’s going on in the gambling world globally and highlight anything out of the ordinary,” said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. “It’s an area where we want to be vigilant. Vegas didn’t change that equation, and this was all coming together while the expansion process was still in its infancy.”
