NBA Franchise Notes: LeBron James Wants Eventual Chance At Team Ownership

Cavaliers F LeBron James on Sunday said he would "love to be a part" of a franchise ownership group eventually, and "if I'm fortunate enough financially to have my own team, that would be awesome" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 8/21). In Cleveland, Bud Shaw wrote the only question for James "is when." Shaw: "And maybe whether it will start off as a minority interest in the Cavs or a majority interest" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 8/21). Meanwhile, James said of his ESPYs speech with three other players, "We know that we have the greatest country in the world, the land of the free, the home of the brave, but at this particular time everyone is not feeling so free. We're feeling a little bit scared and I thought that the ESPYs platform was a perfect platform for us four to go up there and voice our opinion about the state of America" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 8/21).

HOT IN HERE: In Phoenix, Paul Coro notes the Suns "will stage their training camp in Flagstaff" at Northern Arizona Univ. for the fourth consecutive year. Fans "are invited to attend an Oct. 1 Intrasquad scrimmage at noon in NAU's Walkup Skydome." About 5,000 people "attended the Suns' last public scrimmage" at the J.L. Walkup Skydome in '14. This will be the Suns' "20th training camp at NAU." NAU has been the Suns' and WNBA Mercury's "official education partner" since '14 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 8/23).

THE GOOD STUFF: ESPN.com's Mike Triplett noted the Saints and Pelicans announced further plans "to aid victims" of last week's flooding in Louisiana. The Saints said that the proceeds from a new 50/50 raffle program in their two home preseason games "will go toward flood victims through the American Red Cross." The NBA and NBPA also "have committed financial support to the American Red Cross and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation" (ESPN.com, 8/20).
