Poll Of Boston Sports Fans Finds Patriots To Be Area's Favorite Team, Red Sox Second

A new poll of more than 14,600 Boston sports fans asked individuals for their "opinions on the region’s five professional teams" -- the Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Revolution -- and 49% "picked the Patriots as their favorite team," according to Gayle Fee of the BOSTON HERALD. That number is up from 45% last year and nearly twice as high as that for the Red Sox (26%). The respondents were "almost evenly split" on Patriots QB Tom Brady’s decision to accept the NFL’s four-game Deflategate suspension, and 73% "believe NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should be fired." As for the Red Sox, fans "gave the team an overall grade of B, up from C- last year," and 71% said that they "believe the Sox are changing for the better." Red Sox manager John Farrell "came in dead last on the list of admired coaches." Fans were "generally happy with the way things are going with the Celtics," but 52% of those polled said that the Bruins are "changing for the worse." As for the Revolution, "more respondents say they are following soccer now, but they’d be more inclined to go to games if the team played in a stadium nearer to Boston" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/23).
