Adelson Says Las Vegas Stadium Should Be Prioritized Over Convention Center Upgrade

Las Vegas Sands Chair & CEO Sheldon Adelson yesterday challenged MGM Resorts Int'l Chair & CEO Jim Murren’s support of a proposed $1.4B upgrade of the Las Vegas Convention Center, "calling a new stadium backed by Sands a higher priority for Southern Nevada’s tourism economy," according to a front-page piece by Richard Velotta of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. The 11-member Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee, which meets Thursday, has "been charged with delivering nonbinding recommendations on the financing of tourism-related projects to Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Legislature by the end of September." The panel is "not expected to issue firm recommendations until next month." Murren yesterday "declined to respond to Adelson’s comments," but he is "on record as favoring the stadium if less public money is contributed to the project" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/23).

DISSENTING OPINION: A RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL editorial stated the proposed Vegas stadium project, presumably to house the Raiders, is "unlikely to bring the claimed benefits and has a good chance of creating harm if numerous other stadium projects are any indication." But a "perfect storm of circumstances is forming that could make approval for Las Vegas inevitable." Politicians "should listen to economists and voters who think the Raiders stadium proposal is a bad idea" (RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL, 8/22).
