Medal Stand: Olympic Channel Off To Good Start With Bridgestone's Big Commitment

Each day during the Olympics, THE DAILY offers our take on the business performances of some of the people, sponsors, broadcasters and other entities around Rio.

GOLD: USA HOUSE -- The USA House on Ipanema Beach not only is a great location with fantastic decor throughout, but its public-facing retail store has been a huge success, drawing large crowds nearly every day.

SILVER: OLYMPIC CHANNEL -- The IOC’s new digital channel, set to launch Sunday after the Rio Games, has signed its first advertising partner, Bridgestone. The Japanese tire maker has committed a “significant” sum beyond its 10-year global sponsorship of the Games for a founding channel partnership.

BRONZE: THE OLYMPIC BEER CUP -- Rio’s colorful plastic beer cup has become one of the hottest souvenirs of the Games, being traded, sold and even stolen. The cups include the name and silhouette of more than two dozen sports, and fans searching for hard-to-find sports on the cups go so far as to sort through stacks of them while in line for a cold one. Who would have thought?

TIN: HOPE SOLO -- When will U.S. Soccer quit enabling her? Solo’s classless comments after Team USA’s loss to Sweden are tame compared to her litany of incidents over the years, but this time she one-upped her usual position as an embarrassment to her team, and the governing body, by being an embarrassment to the entire country. Maybe it is time for somebody over there to decide that she is just not worth it.
