Las Vegas NHL Team Narrows Name Search Down To Three Options, All With "Hawks"

Las Vegas NHL team Owner Bill Foley on Thursday said that he has "registered domain names for the nicknames Red Hawks, Nighthawks and Desert Hawks," according to Bill Bradley of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. SportsLogos.Net first reported the nicknames. The three "hawks" names for the team "are registered as several different domain names by Foley’s Black Knight IP Holding Company." While the red hawks and desert hawks "do not actually exist, the nighthawks are birds that are indigenous to the state." Nighthawks "has been used" by an AHL team and a defunct UFL team (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/12). CBSSPORTS.com's Chris Peters wrote of the three possible monikers, Red Hawks "would appear to be the least likely." It is a "bit too common and sounds a little too high school for a major professional organization." One "has to wonder" how the Blackhawks "would feel about these options or if they would try to block those names despite the differences." Nighthawks or Night Hawks "might end up being the best compromise" (CBSSPORTS.com, 8/11).
