IndyCar Extends Deal With Pocono Raceway For Two Years Despite Lackluster Attendance

The Verizon IndyCar Series "will be back" at Pocono Raceway in '17 and '18, despite poor attendance the past two years having "created doubt as to whether the series would return this year," according to Scott Walsh of the Scranton TIMES-TRIBUNE. Pocono President & CEO Brandon Igdalsky said, "After a few years of doing this now, we know what to expect and can adjust accordingly. We’re hoping for some additional growth (and) bring some stability to the event and get it in the fans’ minds that the race is going to be here." Igdalsky said that ticket sales for this year’s race "are about the same as they were for last year." An estimated crowd of 30,000 "was on hand" in '15. Igdalsky: "Compared to where it could be, I’m comfortable with it. We’re not thrilled by it, but we’re hoping the weather forecast is good for next week and we get everybody out here." Although the dates for the '17 and '18 IndyCar races at Pocono have not been announced, Igdalsky said that they "likely will be around the same time in August" (Scranton TIMES-TRIBUNE, 8/11).
