HBO's "Hard Knocks" Eyes Biggest Season Yet With Rams' Move To L.A., Goff's Hype

HBO's "Hard Knocks" series on the Rams premieres today, the first time the show "has documented a franchise move ... and the first time it has featured a No. 1 overall pick" in QB Jared Goff, according to Sam Farmer of the L.A. TIMES. A crew of 30 is "on site at training camp for the series." Rams coach Jeff Fisher spoke with his players "on multiple occasions about being under the 'Hard Knocks' microscope." He said, "It’s been an exciting process, it’s been fun. The players are out here to help win games and to improve, not to make a movie. They’re not actors, they’re players." "Hard Knocks" Director Matt Dissinger said, "We’ll work with [the Rams] when it comes to sensitive subjects. If there’s any sort of player who’s going through something that’s very personal, we’ll work with them. But the primary thing is screening for competitive-advantage elements. The guys that really know us at NFL Films, those are the ones that trust us. I would put Coach Fisher in that category”  (L.A. TIMES, 8/7).

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: "Hard Knocks" Exec Producer Marty Callner said the program is the "ultimate survivor show," which makes it "great television." Callner: "You can see it play out. It hits all the human nature situations we go through every day." Callner added he thinks this will "be the biggest year" for the show. Callner: "Because of the storylines, the move from St. Louis, Goff, Hollywood ... it’s got a lot of things going for it. I never thought teams would buy into it at first because it does invade their privacy" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 8/7).

TWO-A-DAYS: In Orlando, Matt Murschel noted Showtime Sports is "currently embedded" with the Florida State football team in Tallahassee for its "A Season With Florida State Football" documentary. The net "spent last season following the trials and tribulations of Notre Dame." FSU fans "can expect the same sort of behind-the-scenes coverage when the show premieres" on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 10:00pm ET, one day after the team's season opener against Ole Miss at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Series Lead Producer Jason Sciavicco "has a crew of 30 to 35 people in Tallahassee with him," and they will "be there for the next four to five months -- in meetings, practices, on campus and in classes -- seven days a week." The only thing fans "won't get to see is actual game planning" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 8/8).
