ESPN NFL Broadcaster Tom Jackson, Known For Measured Analysis, Retires After 29 Years

ESPN yesterday announced the retirement of longtime NFL analyst Tom Jackson, and though his departure "was not unexpected," it still "furthers what will be a drastically new look for ESPN's NFL studio shows this season," according to Neil Best of NEWSDAY. One of the "few returning personalities" will be longtime "Sunday NFL Countdown" host Chris Berman, who "reportedly could be leaving after this season." Jackson joined ESPN in '87 and "has been one of its most respected and prominent NFL analysts" (NEWSDAY, 8/4). DEADLINE's Erik Pederson noted Jackson's "final assignment" will be this weekend's HOF enshrinement ceremony (DEADLINE.com, 8/3). In Denver, Nick Groke writes Jackson over time "carved out a broadcast identity that favored measured logic over snap reaction." He was a "scholar among so many television blowhards" (DENVER POST, 8/4). SPORTING NEWS' Michael McCarthy wrote under the header, "ESPN Will Miss The Smart, Classy Tom Jackson." ESPN has "fired or lost a lot of talent recently," and Jackson is "one that should not be forgotten." This season would have been Jackson and Berman's 30th on the air together. Jackson is "smart, funny, classy," and "got attention from viewers the right way." McCarthy: "Not by screaming and yelling. Not by making absurd assertions designed to start arguments. But by making incisive points about the game and the people playing it. Say what you want about Chris Berman, but he and Jackson were one of the all-time great sports announcing teams" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 8/3).

TWITTER REAX: ESPN's Hannah Storm tweeted, "Feel blessed to have worked with Tom Jackson on Sunday mornings & very grateful for his thoughtful perspective on social issues." USA Today's Bob Nightengale: "It will be strange watching NFL without the presence of @TomJackson57." CBS Sports' Doug Gottlieb: "Tom Jackson was always awesome to work with at ESPN. Prepared, smart and opinionated." DC-area WJFK-FM's Danny Rouhier: "Tom Jackson was terrific for a long time. That Sunday night show was absolutely must see. Great career." The Ringer's Kevin Clark: "The Sunday night NFL Primetimes with Tom Jackson were so great."
