Media Notes

In N.Y., Evan Grossman writes Bill Simmons' new "Any Given Wednesday" is one of the "worst sports shows on TV." While HBO's show appears to be a "work in progress as producers try to figure out what works and what doesn't," it is clear that Simmons was "much better as a podcast host, documentary producer and occasional columnist." Simmons is not a "rebel with searing takes and headstrong ideas." Grossman: "While that's what he was sold to us as, Simmons has been nothing more than an HBO cheerleader." "Any Given Wednesday" interviews its guests "in a weird cross-promotional lounge for other HBO shows" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/29).

ADD SOME MAYO: In Boston, Chad Finn notes former NFLer and Patriots player Jerod Mayo "has replaced Kay Adams" on CSN New England’s “Quick Slants” program. Adams "left for a new program on the NFL Network." Host Tom Curran gives the show "an irreverent, insightful vibe," as it "still feels new." Part of the show's appeal is that it "manages to interact with fans -- there’s a social media aspect of the show in which Curran answers Facebook questions -- without trafficking in the cheap sports-media currency of our time: insincere, contrived hot-takes" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/29).

ALMOST FAMOUS
: MASHABLE's Casey Butler reviewed the Overtime app, which "features highlights of amateur basketball action from all over the country." Content can be "shared on the app and on social media and also be embedded in websites." It highlights top plays and features teams and schools "that you might not even know." While Overtime is focused primarily on basketball, it "does highlight other sports, including lacrosse, baseball and skateboarding" (MASHABLE.com, 7/27).

ON THE MOVE: The Denver Post announced Nicki Jhabvala is "taking over" as the paper's top Broncos beat reporter. The paper also moved Rockies reporter Nick Groke to the Broncos beat. Nick Kosmider will join Patrick Saunders covering the Rockies (DENVERPOST.com, 7/27)....Ralph Vacchiano is leaving the N.Y. Daily News after nearly 19 years to serve as SNY's NFL insider. Vacchiano had covered the Giants for 15 years at the paper (THE DAILY)....The Raleigh News & Observer's Laura Keeley is leaving the paper after four years as its Duke beat writer to attend Columbia Law School (RALEIGHCO.com, 7/27).
