Facebook Enlists Popular Soccer Teams, Athletes To Help Drive Live Streaming Efforts

Facebook has "drafted a roster of soccer teams and stars to create live videos in hopes that the world’s most popular sport can help the social network score with its live streaming efforts," according to Steven Perlberg of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Of the roughly $50M Facebook has "agreed to dole out," athletes, sports teams and sports media companies "are set to collect" about $4.4M in payments. Soccer, in particular, "figures prominently on Facebook’s list of contracts." The highest-paid sports organization, La Liga club FC Barcelona, is "slated to receive" about $1.03M from May through March of next year, "making the Spanish soccer team the 18th highest-paid on Facebook’s list of media companies, athletes and celebrities." The top-paid entity overall is BuzzFeed, which is "set to receive" $3.05M. La Liga club Real Madrid will receive "about $917,000 to produce live video." EPL club Arsenal "has a contract for about $349,000," and Manchester City "is to receive $221,000." Individual soccer players also are "receiving payments."  Portuguese club Porto GK Iker Casillas "is set to collect about $211,000," while USWNT MF Alex Morgan "is slated to bring in about $115,000." Orlando City SC MF Kaka will receive about $49,000. Facebook’s efforts "come as its competitors are striking deals to bring more sports content to their platforms." Twitter "has been on a sports deal-making binge as of late." Snapchat, for its part, "has also struck sports deals, including a two-year arrangement with Turner Sports" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/29).
