Turner Sports' ELeague Announces New Fall Season, Suggests It Will Be Shorter

With the first "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" season of ELeague "set to conclude this weekend, plans are already underway for a second season" that will begin this fall, according to Callum Leslie of the DAILY DOT. The second season follows the "conclusion of the recently announced 'Overwatch' Open in September." Turner VP/esports & GM of ELeague Christina Alejandre "hinted at a different format in the next season," and indicated the season "would be shorter" (DAILYDOT.com, 7/27). Turner Sports Exec VP & Chief Content Officer Craig Barry said that by all measures, Turner Sports "is already pleased with how the league has performed." Barry: "In our business, engagement is going to be one of the most important metrics going forward. And specifically around engagement, we’ve had a very successful first season." DIGIDAY's Sahil Patel notes while ELeague "racked up 18.7 million views on Twitch, the bigger question is how it performed on TV -- an area where there is still some doubt on whether eSports can gain traction." On TV, the numbers "are encouraging." SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen said, "It's an encouraging start. It represents a consolidation of an audience that's typically been much more fragmented." Patel notes viewership among men 18-34 was up 70% "when compared to programming TBS used to air in ELeague's Friday night timeslot." Barry: "We're all in. This is a marathon for us, not a sprint" (DIGIDAY.com, 7/29).
