Beef And Bottle: Andrew Johnston Has Become Golf's Latest Cult Hero

Golfer Andrew "Beef" Johnston has "risen from obscurity in recent months to become something of a cult hero, a beer-swigging, bushy-bearded, round-bellied Englishman whose toothy smile has become as ubiquitous as crowd chants of 'Beeeeeeef!,'" according to a profile piece by Brian Costa of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Johnston was "largely unknown" before April, when he earned his first career European Tour win at the Spanish Open. However, that win combined with an 8th place finish earlier this month in the British Open has made Johnston the "face of beef" over the past couple months. He recently signed an "endorsement deal with Arby's, the fast-food chain known for its roast beef."  Costa: "The attention still amazes him" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/27). In Toronto, Jon McCarthy notes Johnston, golf's "overnight sensation," has been the "biggest star at the PGA Championship" this week. Johnston following a practice round yesterday found an "autograph line" usually reserved for players like Phil Mickelson or Rory McIlroy. Johnston took "selfies with nearly everyone in a 100-yard line." With his manager looking on in "joy and disbelief, Johnston makes his way down the line without missing a single person" (TORONTO SUN, 7/27).

CHANGING OF THE GUARD
: In N.Y., George Willis notes for those "wondering when the post-Tiger Woods era will arrive, look no further" than the PGA Championship. Willis: "Guess what? It's not nearly as frightening as most envisioned." Golf is perhaps in its best place since Woods started "becoming a non-factor due to persistent back injuries that have cost him" all of the '16 season. The Big Three of McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth has turned into the "Big Bunch of Guys," and that is "not necessarily a bad thing" (N.Y. POST, 7/27).
