Source: Big Ten's Delany Will Step Down When Current Contract Expires In '20

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany "plans to step down" in '20, according to a source cited by Nicole Auerbach of USA TODAY. The 68-year-old Delany yesterday during the conference's football media days said that he "did not expect to still be in his current role when the Big Ten's new television deal expires in six years." His tenure with the Big Ten began in '89 (USA TODAY, 7/27). The Chicago Tribune's Teddy Greenstein noted Delany in a text message declined to confirm that he will step down when his contract expires in '20. He wrote, "Work still challenging and fun -- lots of energy" (TWITTER.com, 7/26). In Illinois, Loren Tate writes Delany has "turned out to be a visionary for the ages." What he has accomplished during his 28-year tenure "clears the decks for his successor, who’ll be the first to renegotiate in what could be a more favorable market." Some "correctly label Delany as the most forward-thinking leader in amateur sports." He was the "driving force in the shocking additions of Penn State and Nebraska when few saw that coming," and he later "expanded horizons to the Atlantic Ocean with Maryland and Rutgers" (Champaign NEWS-GAZETTE, 7/27).

BOWLED OVER: The AP's Andrew Seligman noted Delany "does not envision the Rose Bowl moving from its New Year's Day spot in order to accommodate" the CFP semifinals. Delany yesterday indicated that there "might be 'some movement from the bowls' but doesn't see those changes impacting the Rose Bowl" (AP, 7/26).
