Olympic Athletes Village Still Yet To Pass Safety Tests As ROCOG Stresses Patience

Less than two weeks ahead of the Olympics, ROCOG has "acknowledged that 19 of the 31 buildings in the Athletes Village have yet to pass safety tests," according to Jonathan Watts of the GUARDIAN. Close to 10% of competitors have arrived in Brazil and "many are housed in the village, though the shoddy conditions -- which include flooded floors, broken elevators, mold and holes in the ceiling -- have shocked some team managers, athletes and volunteers." But Rio organizers "promise to resolve the problems by Thursday." ROCOG Exec Dir of Communications Mario Andrada "admitted only 12 of the 31 tower blocks have been checked and proved OK" (GUARDIAN, 7/26). ROCOG President Carlos Nuzman said, "Every Olympic Village, because of their magnitude, needs some adjustments until it becomes perfect. The important thing is that everything will be resolved before the Games" (L.A. TIMES, 7/26). The AP notes Belarus' delegation has deemed the village "unsanitary" and has "complained about having no hot water, only sometimes cold water, and a failing sewage system" (AP, 7/26). Netherlands Chef de Mission Maurits Hendriks said the "size and frequency" of the Olympic Village problems has "surprised us.” Meanwhile, Italy's delegation "decided Sunday to take on the role of contractor." Italian National Olympic Committee Deputy Secretary General Carlo Mornati said that to get things moving, the delegation "hired its own electricians, plumbers and construction workers so apartments could be 'brought up to standard as soon as possible'" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/26).
