Chargers Tout Possibilities Of Convention Center In Ongoing Downtown Stadium Effort

While the Chargers wait for football season to launch their stadium political campaign, they have "kept busy studying the potential of their other big idea: building a second convention center in San Diego," according to Dan McSwain of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Chargers Chair Dean Spanos said, “If you want to go downtown and need to win a public vote, it has to be multi-purpose." McSwain noted Spanos has "hired some prominent tourism-industry consultants, not only to run the numbers, but also to advise the Chargers’ architect on a design that could work well for conventions without disrupting" the NFL schedule. The consultants on Wednesday "released preliminary findings." If they "hold up to scrutiny in the final report, the facts would debunk some objections that have surfaced in recent months." The Chargers said that the NFL "has agreed to schedule away games on specific Sundays each month during the football season -- along with the adjacent Monday and Thursday nights." In theory, the concession "would allow convention planners to book events years in advance for 10 days each month during the season" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7/21).
