Large Crowd Expected In Cooperstown To Welcome Griffey, Piazza To Baseball HOF

Mike Piazza and Ken Griffey Jr. will be inducted into the Baseball HOF this weekend in Cooperstown in front of what is "likely to be a substantial crowd," according to Anne Delaney of the Utica OBSERVER-DISPATCH. Baseball HOF Dir of Communications Craig Muder in an email wrote that the HOF "is anticipating attendance figures in the range of 40,000 -- similar to the two previous weekends" in '15 and '14. A year ago, John Smoltz, Craig Biggio, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez "were inducted in front of 45,000, the fourth-largest all time." In '14, the "third-largest crowd (48,000) attended the mega-class enshrinements of managers Bobby Cox, Tony LaRussa and Joe Torre and players Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine." The largest crowd all time "was estimated at 75,000" for the '07 weekend honoring Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn. Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce Exec Dir Matt Hazzard "offered a wildcard factor behind the educated guesses: Piazza’s connection to the Mets." He said, “When you’re dealing with a local team, a 4- to 6-hour drive away, it’s hard to gauge. A lot of people make day trips and not overnight.” The Mets begin a three-game series in Miami today, so Hazzard "theorizes that perhaps their fans will consider a trip to Cooperstown." He added, “That could increase the number of those showing up" (Utica OBSERVER-DISPATCH, 7/22).
