MLB All-Star FanFest Attendance Down 5% From Last Year; Miami Prepares For '17 Game

MLB said it generated an attendance of 117,144 for its All-Star FanFest in San Diego, down 5% from its draw of 123,312 last year in Cincinnati. Similar to the ’15 FanFest at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, this year’s iteration at the San Diego Convention Center was in close proximity to ballpark-based All-Star events. But the league added additional outdoor components to the run of activities that took advantage of the favorable weather. This year’s total surpassed the 114,878 recorded two years ago in Minneapolis. Overall, the league drew more than 280,000 to all its non-ballpark All-Star Game events in San Diego, including FanFest, a trio of free concerts, the Color Run, a new Soul Pose outdoor yoga event, the Red Carpet parade, Pepsi-sponsored Block Party and the newly created Play Ball Park. The three days of ballpark events at Petco Park drew a combined total of 124,564, down 4.8% from the 130,904 last year at Great American Ball Park, which allowed a slightly higher attendance after seat kills (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

MOVING FORWARD: In Miami, Andre Fernandez notes the Marlins are "on the clock," as they are slated to host the ASG next year. Marlins President David Samson was with a "contingent of 75 from the Marlins organization who made the trip to San Diego." Next year will be the "first time" Miami has hosted the MLB ASG. Samson: "One of the major things was seeing the people of San Diego and how they stepped up" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/14). In Ft. Lauderdale, Craig Davis notes the countdown "will amp up with the unveiling of the logo for the game later this month" at the Marlins ballpark. Samson "reiterated this week" that the retractable-roof ballpark "will have a different name" by next year's game. Marlins officials have been counting on the national showcase to "serve as the catalyst for a naming rights deal that has been missing since the ballpark opened" in '12 (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 7/14).
