Olympic Notes: Draymond Green Unlikely To Lose Roster Spot Over Arrest

SI.com's Michael McCann noted while it is unlikely that Warriors F Draymond Green would lose his spot on the Olympic roster due to "what appears to be a relatively minor incident," USA Basketball and the USOC "will likely review Green’s situation." Green "was arrested for assault Sunday" following an altercation with another man in a Michigan restaurant. Both USA Basketball and the USOC "want to ensure that the alleged incident does not warrant his expulsion for failing to meet the conduct expected of U.S. Olympians." But an arrest of Green "could interfere with his eligibility to enter Brazil" (SI.com, 7/11).

CONVERSATION STARTER: MLBPA Exec Dir Tony Clark was "noncommittal about having players on 25-man active rosters made available" for the '20 Tokyo Games. The IOC exec board voted last month to "support a six-nation tournament that year in both baseball and women's softball, and the full IOC is to vote in August." Clark said, "Is there an appreciation for the value of having baseball in the Olympics? Yes, there is. Is there an appreciation for the season and how or if it could work with our active players? Yeah, there's a conversation, but we run into the same roadblocks we always have" (AP, 7/11).

TEENAGE DREAMS: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Sara Germano notes 16-year-old Sydney McLaughlin will be the "youngest American track athlete to compete in an Olympics" since '72, and she "is set to become one of the faces of track and field" at the Rio Games. She is also "part of a track-and-field youth movement" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/12). Meanwhile, U.S. gymnast Simone Biles was profiled last night on ABC’s “Nightline.” The 19-year-old was home-schooled growing up and said, “I can say I’ve missed a prom but I’ve been to three World Championships” (“Nightline,” ABC, 7/11).
