Durant, And Nike, Moving To Warriors Could Reduce Spotlight On Under Armour/Curry

Yesterday was a "bad day for Under Armour," as the company previously "owned this Warriors team" through its sponsorship of G Stephen Curry but will now have to share the market with Nike and newly signed F Kevin Durant, according to FS1's Colin Cowherd. FS1's Jason Whitlock said Nike feels like Durant winning a title "as soon as possible and getting him some of the love that was headed Steph's way as soon as possible is good for Nike and undercuts Under Armour." He said if Nike "drove" Durant's move to the Warriors, there "will be some pushback in terms of, ‘Now the shoe companies are in charge of teams.’” Cowherd replied, “They have been for years. This league’s been run by agents and shoe companies since the ‘80s.” Whitlock agreed but said it has never been at “this level, and for people to know it is different, so there will be some pushback” ("Speak For Yourself," FS1, 7/4). In San Jose, Marcus Thompson II prior to Durant's announcement cited sources as saying while the former MVP was "making a basketball decision ... some of Durant's people want him in the Bay Area, in a larger market and in the Silicon Valley mix." There was "talk that Nike wouldn't mind Durant with the Warriors to steal some shine" from the UA-Curry partnership. Durant is repped by Roc Nation Sports, and sources said that agency owner Jay-Z also wanted Durant "on the Warriors" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 7/2).
