Dolphins Donate $5M To Cancer Center, Largest Single Amount By An NFL Team

The Dolphins yesterday "donated more than" $5M to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the largest single amount ever by an NFL team to a charity, according to Chris Perkins of the South Florida SUN-SENTINEL. The funds were "raised through the Dolphins Cancer Challenge, which includes fund-raising bike rides of varying lengths that end at the Dolphins' stadium." The DCC, entering its seventh year, "has raised more than" $16M the previous six years for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Univ. of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The event was started in '10 in honor of former Dolphins TE Jim Mandich, who died of cancer, and is now the "biggest health event of the Miami Dolphins Foundation." Next year's DCC "is scheduled for Feb. 11." DCC Vice Chair Eric Feder said, "We'll have something for everybody. We'll continue to have our 5K walk/run. We'll have several bike rides from 13 miles up to 100 miles. We will invite anyone to participate as a virtual ride or a volunteer so we encourage everybody to participate somehow some way" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 6/30).
