Eugene Anticipating Big Crowds For Olympic Track & Field Trials At Hayward Field

The Univ. of Oregon's Hayward Field will host the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials beginning Friday, marking the "third straight time -- and sixth overall -- the U.S. team for the Summer Games will be decided in Eugene," according to Chris Hansen of the Eugene REGISTER-GUARD. Approximately 1,100 athletes will "descend on the city over the next two weeks, vying for spots on the team heading to Rio." The trials will take place in an "expanded Hayward Field, with temporary seating boosting capacity from 10,500 to nearly 22,000 for the nine days of competition from July 1-10." More than 2,000 volunteers have "signed up to help make the meet run smoothly." The free fan festival, which was "wildly popular" in '08 and '12, is "expected to be again this year." The festival takes place on UO's intramural fields and includes "music, vendors, food and a big screen showing the events taking place inside the stadium for those who don't have tickets." Prefontaine Classic Dir Tom Jordan said, "I was surprised by the attendance at the festival (in '08). We already knew from the ticket sales that we were going to have a full house inside, but there were thousands there every day." Hansen noted Eugene also hosted the Olympic Trials in '72, '76 and '80. TrackTown USA President and Oregon Associate AD Vin Lananna said that the school will "go for No. 7 soon when the bidding process begins" for '20. Lananna: "Sometimes things are just a great match ... We clearly want to do 2020. This is absolutely where it should be" (Eugene REGISTER-GUARD, 6/27).
