Cost Of Attendance, Decrease In C-USA TV Revenue Put LA Tech In Financial Bind

Louisiana Tech already operates with the "lowest budget" in Conference USA, and this summer's implementation of cost-of-attendance "has the athletic department about to set sail on trying times," according to Sean Isabella of the Monroe NEWS-STAR. LA Tech AD Tommy McClelland said, "The reality is next year is going to be one of the more fiscally challenging years ... not only because conference revenue is going down but because of the increase in expense as it relates to the cost of attendance." Isabella noted LA Tech is facing a decreased media-rights take -- from $1.1M to around $200,000 -- "as part of the new TV deal" for C-USA. LA Tech in '14-15 "remained at the bottom" of CUSA and ranked 124th nationally with a revenue stream of $22.2M. McClelland is "expecting to receive between $220,000 and $440,000" in total from the conference, which is "at least a decrease of $660,000." And even though cost-of-attendance is "primarily coming from private funds, it's still a new cost in the sense that the money could be used elsewhere." The silver lining is LA Tech has "prepared for this day." The school has "two options: cut expenses or raise revenue." A combination of the two will "take place in Tech's athletic department." McClelland "didn't pinpoint exact areas that may be cut or squeezed, but he said he's optimistic Tech can work through the issues." A five-year, $3.025M apparel deal with adidas begins in July, which, "at minimum, will save at least $50,000 since all sports, with the exception of women's basketball" until '17, will be under adidas. A new extension with Learfield Sports that was "agreed upon last winter will provide $650,000 guaranteed revenue." LA Tech has also "tapped into a new $500,000 annual revenue stream from the Davison Athletics Complex upon its opening" in September '15 (Monroe NEWS-STAR, 6/25).
