Blue Jackets Minority Owner John Wolfe Passes Away, Was Instrumental In Getting Team To City

Blue Jackets Minority Owner JOHN WOLFE passed away on Friday after battling cancer for two years at the age of 72, according to Miller & Johnson of the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. Wolfe "invested in both the construction" of Nationwide Arena and the Blue Jackets franchise "as a way to bring professional sports to" Columbus. He also helped bring MLS to the city with Columbus Crew SC and "fought vigorously against placement of a casino downtown and in favor of a new ballpark for the" Triple-A Int'l League Columbus Clippers (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 6/25). NHL Commissioner GARY BETTMAN said, "His support of the city's first major sports franchise, the attention and focus he directed toward the construction of Nationwide Arena, and his dedication to the development of the Arena District are just three illustrations of John's devotion to his beloved hometown" (DISPATCH.com, 6/24). Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations JOHN DAVIDSON announced Wolfe's passing prior to the team's first round selection in this weekend's NHL Draft. Davidson called Wolfe "a giant supporter" of the team (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/25).
