Media Notes

In Seattle, Geoff Baker cites sources as saying that the Trail Blazers "will announce within a week or two they’ll join" Mariners-owned Root Sports Northwest "on a partnership with enhanced distribution" of games. The "attractive part" of Root Sports is that DirecTV is a 29% minority partner in the RSN (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/27).

HOMETOWN HERO: SI.com's Richard Deitsch noted the Nationals "have a new radio affiliate" in Las Vegas in KXST-AM. The station aired "its first Nationals game last week." Nationals Senior Manager of Communications Kyle Brostowitz said, "We are pretty certain no other Major League Baseball team has a network radio affiliate so far outside of their market" (SI.com, 6/26). Las Vegas is the hometown of Nationals RF Bryce Harper (THE DAILY).

CLOSING THE GAP: In San Jose, Jon Wilner noted Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott last week "acknowledged the existence of a gap" in revenue between the Pac-12 and Big Ten. Scott said there is "no silver bullet" for the conference on the revenue front. Scott: "No one is satisfied with DirecTV, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the right strategy." Scott said that conference distributions, of which TV rights are by far the largest piece, "are just one income stream for athletic departments" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 6/23).

TOO MUCH: In Tampa Bay, Tom Jones writes Saturday night's Premier Boxing Champions match between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter on CBS "was a terrific bout, but became practically unwatchable because of the call by lead announcer Mauro Ranallo." There is "one golden rule in broadcasting: The announcer should never make himself bigger than the event he is covering." Ranallo "broke that rule." His over-the-top style with "corny puns and forced metaphors completely overshadowed the fight" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 6/27).
