College Facility Notes: Colorado Looks For Ways To Monetize Folsom Field Upgrades

In Boulder, Sarah Kuta noted with Colorado's $166M Folsom Field expansion "now complete, the athletic department is looking for ways to monetize the improvements" to the stadium and nearby facilities. Concerts, like the two Dead & Company shows scheduled for next weekend, "could be a new source of revenue for the department -- though university officials wouldn't even hint publicly at how much money the concerts could net the campus." CU officials also are "brainstorming other new revenue sources for CU's renovated facilities, such as hosting weddings, corporate events and, maybe someday, ski and snowboard events." CU Chief Spokesperson Ryan Huff said that the "only guaranteed revenue from the shows is a $250,000 stadium rental fee" (Boulder DAILY CAMERA, 6/26).

HARK THE SOUND: The AP's Aaron Beard reported UNC "has approval" for a $25M indoor football practice facility. The school is "working on plans to move the outdoor track out of Fetzer Field and make Fetzer solely a lacrosse-soccer facility." UNC also is spending around $4M to "renovate the men's basketball locker room and reconfigure surrounding areas in the Smith Center" (AP, 6/24).

DID YOU SAY UTES? In Salt Lake City, Keith McCord noted Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium has a "new giant video scoreboard" that also includes a "brand new sound system." The $13.5M board "is 122 feet wide, 64 feet tall and has 2.6 million pixels, making it one of the bigger boards in the country" (DESERET NEWS, 6/25).
