Sharp-Dressed Men: NBA Draftees' Fashion Choices Range From Simple To Flashy

Many NBA draftees last night “kept their styles simple, refined, professional,” while some “used their clothing to speak to their roots,” according to Matt Wyatt of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. Few “were flashy,” yet Lakers draftee and second overall pick Brandon Ingram was “second to none in the fashion category.” He “stole the show with an ashy, burnt out charcoal-looking jacket with wide black lapels” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/24). SI.com’s Jamie Lisanti notes Chicago-based ESQ Clothing “outfitted six players” at the Draft. Among the players for which the company “created two suits each” were G Kris Dunn, G Demetrius Jackson, C Jakob Poeltl and C Damian Jones -- “one for draft night and one for Friday’s press conferences.” ESQ Clothing Owner Ge Wang said that “another big part of this year’s draft outfits were the players’ shoes.” He added that his “focus for this year’s NBA draft was sharp angles, vivid colors and clean lines” (SI.com, 6/24).

WHERE IT ALL STARTED: In L.A., Ben Bolch notes Dunn "proceeded to generate the most viral video of the first round when he gave shout-outs during his ESPN interview to Gucci for his sparkly shoes and J.C. Penney for his custom burgundy suit" (L.A. TIMES, 6/24). ESPN's Jemele Hill said of the Draft, "What I loved is Kris Dunn, 'Shout out to J.C. Penny,' he got them trending in the country and I don't know the last time J.C. Penney was able to do that" ("Mike & Mike," ESPN Radio, 6/24). Dunn said of his Draft-night suit, which had the word "Whalers" and the number "3" embroidered on the inside of his jacket, "My city, this is my high school team, New London Whalers, that's where it all started, they showed me so much support and love I just try to give it back." Dunn said of his shoes, "These are Gucci. ... I had to show some spunk" ("NBA Draft," ESPN, 6/23).
