More People Attend Head-To-Head Mets Game Over Yankees For First Time Since '08

For the first time in the 7 1/2-year histories of Citi Field and the new Yankee Stadium, "more people paid to watch the Mets than the Yankees when the two played home games on the same day," according to Jared Diamond of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Until Tuesday, the teams had "hosted games on the same day 46 times" since '09. The Yankees "drew a larger attendance in all of them." That streak would come to an end on Tuesday, when 40,122 fans went to Citi Field while the Yankees hosted 34,760 fans. That has not occurred since Sept. 14, '08. The question now is "whether Tuesday was an anomaly or a sign of things to come" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/24).

HIGH EXPECTATIONS: In Detroit, Anthony Fenech notes Tigers' fans continue to come to the ballpark, however "the early returns on this season's attendance figures show a bit of a drop off." Through 34 home games, the Tigers are "averaging 29,935 fans per night, 14th-highest in baseball." The Tigers have averaged "more than 30,000 fans in each of the 10 seasons since their renaissance" '06 season. Their highest average attendance was 39,538. Last season, the Tigers "averaged 33,654 fans, ninth-highest in baseball." They have not hit the "magic mark of 3,000,000 fans" since '13 and "likely won't this season." Tigers season-ticket contributions "went down after a last-place finish" in '15, but they "have not experienced a sharp decline" because of it (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/24).
