Penn State's Beaver Stadium Likely To Undergo Renovations To Create More Revenue

Penn State AD Sandy Barbour is "still tight-lipped on the subject of revamping Beaver Stadium," according to Megan Ryan of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. The stadium has been in its current location since '60 and seats 107,000. But athletic department officials in January said that "there are improvements to be made on the amenities, from bathrooms to concessions to WiFi." However, Barbour on Wednesday said that the department "won't reveal what those improvements might be until 'early fall' when the the completed Intercollegiate Athletics' facilities master plan is likely released." Another motivating factor for renovating the stadium is to "generate more revenue from the stadium beyond football games." Barbour said that "obtaining a liquor license and allowing sales in controlled areas like club seats and suites will help Penn State attract concerts, NHL preseason games and international soccer matches." Next in line is "finishing up an upgrade to the Lasch Football Building." Barbour said that the upgrade "should be done by early fall like the master plan, which will include 'concepts rather than 'designs.'" Barbour also said that "most of the facilities included in the master plan will rely on a combination of philanthropy, athletic department capital funds and/or debt financing" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/23).
