Padres See Year-Over-Year Attendance Decline At Petco Park As Team Struggles

The Padres hold the third-worst record in the NL, and overall attendance at Petco Park this season "is down substantially" compared to last year, according to Kirk Kenney of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Crowds are "down nearly 5,000 per game from this point" last year. The Padres' attendance of 1,023,023 over 38 home games "equates to 26,922 per game." After 38 home games last season, the Padres had drawn 1,198,553 fans for an average of 31,541 per game, a "difference of 4,619 a game." And barring a "surge in wins, it will be difficult to maintain fan interest as the season progresses." If attendance "slips similarly the second half of this season, the Padres will end up with their second-lowest season attendance total since moving to Petco Park" in '04. Only the '09 season -- when attendance "totaled 1,922,603 -- would be less" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/18). In San Diego, Nick Canepa writes of Padres President & CEO Mike Dee, who has faced calls for his dismissal, "I’m not ashamed to say I like the man, know his role, know his passions, and applauded the organization when it hired him." Dee's job "not only is to oversee everything" Exec VP & GM A.J. Preller and the baseball side "is doing, but to make money for the organization." And this "he has done." He has "assembled the smartest group of people" since former President & CEO Larry Lucchino ran the club. Canepa: "They can flat market. The wheels never stop. They do misfire. Not everything sticks to the whiteboard. But they try." Since Dee was hired in '13, the Padres have made $50M "more than before he got there." To "put all the blame on Dee for what's happened on the field is nonsense" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/20).
