Clippers Take Another Step Toward Streaming Platform, Begin Gauging Fans' Interest

The Clippers now are surveying fans to "gauge interest" in forming an OTT network, which would "involve advanced statistics accessible through an app or a website to complement game coverage and be viewed simultaneously," according to Ben Bolch of the L.A. TIMES. The Clippers are still in negotiations with Fox Sports to continue broadcasting games on Prime Ticket after their "previous contract expired at the end of last season." A source said that Fox offered around $50M a year for one year and was also open to a two-year deal, but was "reluctant to discuss a long-term contract because of the unknown value of the separate streaming feed, which is unprecedented in the NBA." The team's previous deal with Fox was about $25M annually. Bolch notes content for the streaming feed "would be produced independent of Fox through a third party." Among the issues to be "resolved with a streaming feed of analytical data is a price point, the accessibility of the information it provides and consumer interest." An anonymous TV exec said that he "anticipated the Clippers re-signing with Fox." With the season only 4 1/2 months away, it leaves the team "little time to secure a new partner or launch its own production company" (L.A. TIMES, 6/16). In California, Dan Woike noted the Clippers with the survey hope to "gather more information about how their fans watch games and what features they’d want" in an OTT service (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 6/15).

CHANGING MEDIA LANDSCAPE: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the "transformation of television as we know it" is one of the things that worries him about the future. He said, "I’m spending a lot of time watching the trends in terms of pay television. That’s still the mainstay of our business, certainly in the United States, so I’m very interested to follow those trends.” Silver: “I’m spending a lot of time watching the trend from traditional television more towards more app-based viewership, tablet-based and smart phones” (CNBC.com, 6/15).
