Chips & Putts: Critiques On U.S. Open Outfits For Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth

GOLF DIGEST STIX' Marty Hackel breaks down the U.S. Open outfits of several golfers as the tourney gets under way today. adidas is outfitting Jason Day "with two distinct looks." Today and Saturday, Day will "go with solids, and the color selections are perfect for TV." Tomorrow and Sunday, he will wear a contrast-placket-and-collar design that "is very much on trend and emphasizes a major motif in Adidas’ current collections." Meanwhile, this "just might be the best four-day major line-up" from Rory Mcllroy and Nike. His wardrobe is "simple, clean and clear." The monochromatic look "really works well, especially with his belt colors coordinating with the pants and the strong engineered color blocs." And give Jordan Spieth and Under Armour credit for "amping up his wardrobe by introducing some new colors and patterns." Today’s opener is "his go-to look, but Friday steps it up considerably." The shirt "will look great on hi-def monitors." Saturday "is once again standard Spieth, yet Sunday’s shirt once again has some real pop" (GOLF DIGEST STIX, 6/15 issue).

PURSUIT OF PERFECTION: FOX BUSINESS' Matthew Rocco noted Lexus, one of the leading sponsors of the U.S. Open, has plans for "giveaways, interactive displays and meet-and-greets with Lexus-sponsored golfers." In its 10th year as a U.S. Open sponsor, Lexus said that it will make "over 300 vehicles available to players" and USGA staff, and fans "driving a Lexus can use one of 100 preferred parking spots reserved for owners." Exclusive autograph sessions will include Day, plus "other golfers who have sponsorship pacts with Lexus" (FOXBUSINESS.com, 6/13).

FAN CONNECTION: In Pennsylvania, Aaron Kasinitz notes Rickie Fowler "has drummed up ideas to promote the game in any means possible." This week he "used Snapchat to chronicle his practice rounds with dozens of videos and photos." He said that fans "told him they loved seeing his pictures." Plus his Snapchat profile "has given fans a look at how he prepares." On Monday, he posted a Snapstory -- or a short series of photos and videos -- "showing himself goofing around with Spieth and McIlroy as the trio tested out Oakmont" (Harrisburg PATRIOT-NEWS, 6/16).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: In Michigan, Cory Olsen noted golfer Morgan Pressel on Tuesday "greeted customers" at a Meijer store in Grand Rapids, Mich. She "loaded their groceries for Curbside customers as a way to share the story about Simply Give," which is Meijer's "drive to fill food banks throughout the midwest." Pressel also "handed customers tickets to the Meijer LPGA Classic," which runs today through Sunday at Blythefield Country Club. Customers also "received an autographed ball by Pressel" and were notified that Procter & Gamble "had made a $10 donation in their name to Simply Give" (MLIVE.com, 6/14).
