Minding My Business: Fox Sports Coordinating Producer Mark Loomis Talks U.S. Open

Name: Mark Loomis

Position: Fox Sports Coordinating Producer

Age: 49

Where I’m from: Westchester County, N.Y.

Where I call home: New Canaan, Conn.

Focusing on right now: Making sure we’re crossing all the T’s and dotting the I’s when it comes to the U.S. Open. It’s almost 40 hours of television over four days.

Best advice: Do what you think is the right thing to do. If you get in a position to oversee one of these, you’ll take as much input as you possibly can, but it’s such a subjective business. In the end, you need to make the decisions. But use your experience and what you’ve heard from others.

Must for a new hire: You really have to understand golf. I also love to have people who don’t necessarily have the same opinions or background that I have. That’s one of the great things about our announce crew -- they’re all so different.

Best book I’ve read: I read a great book called “HOW CHILDREN SUCCEED” -- I have two kids -- and it’s about what separates a child that doesn’t thrive and one who does. How kids have and haven’t succeeded. Also “BLINK” by MALCOLM GLADWELL. I kind of poke back through that one every once in a while.

First thing in the morning: I always get my phone out to see what I missed overnight -- that’s my first 10 minutes. Then I’m up and driving kids to school. Coffee I kind of save as my mid-morning snack. This Thursday, we’re not on the air until 10:00am, but we’ll get to the course by 6:00 so we’re prepared.

Talking tech: We’re doing our featured holes this week in 4K. The more we can bring a depth home to people, the better off we are. We’re going to have cameras everywhere -- our main feed, featured holes feed and two featured group feeds. I’d be interested in five years to see, maybe we can give viewers every camera at home and you can make your own experience. Virtual reality also is something Fox has put a lot into.

Must-have music: I usually have on the radio what my kids are listening to -- so it winds up being some kind of hip hop station. But I’m a big LUKAS GRAHAM fan right now. I went to my first BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN concert two months ago in Hartford. I loved it.

Food for thought: I used to do college football on ESPN and always had fun doing a segment called “Taste of the Town” with TODD BLACKLEDGE. It’s always nice when you get a little bit of the local flavor. A cheeseburger is always pretty good for me.

How I unwind: I love to play golf -- I’ve been playing my whole life. There’s nothing I like better than going and playing with my 13-year-old son BEN. I’ve actually started caddying for him in some tournaments, which is fun.

Day in the life: The thing about golf is that when everyone tees off, you have no idea of the 156 golfers which one’s going to be leading at the end of the day. It’s not like a football game where you know who the quarterbacks are. You know the golf course is going to be a story you have to tell. You have the stories going in, whether it being the top three in the world or PHIL MICKELSON trying to win the career slam. You have to react pretty quickly to what’s going on.
