Padres Stress Commitment To Mike Dee Despite Recent Calls For His Dismissal

Amid calls for his firing as the Padres' President & CEO after a poor start to the '16 season, Mike Dee yesterday "received a strong vote of confidence" from co-Owner Peter Seidler, according to Dennis Lin of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Responding to a "coordinated effort from several local blogs urging the club, in the midst of another sub.-500 season, to remove its highest-ranking executive, Seidler cited Dee's influence on the business side of operations." He also said that he "expected Dee to remain with the organization for the foreseeable future." Seidler: "We hired Mike a little less than three years ago. He's made a significant, very measurable, positive impact on the business of the Padres. Revenue has grown through all the relevant categories." He added, "I expect him to be our CEO for a long, long time. Mike has a very long-term contract with us, and I expect him to honor it." Lin notes Dee has "come under fire as the Padres have continued to fail to put a winning product on the field." But Seidler said, "Anybody who works as hard as Mike does and juggles as many balls as he does, from time to time there's probably going to be things you can criticize him for -- just like anybody can criticize me for things -- but when you balance the scales, I think he does an exceptional job for us." Asked if anything could cause him to entertain a change in leadership structure, Seidler responded, "No chance. ... We're all in the foxhole together. We're all working very hard" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/14).

MUSICAL CHAIRS? Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal last week cited a source as saying that Padres Owner Ron Fowler "could be replaced" by Seidler. But in San Diego, Nick Canepa notes taking Fowler out "would not be near Seidler's style." Seidler called the report "bizarre and laughable." He added, "I can promise you our current structure could be in place a long time." Canepa notes Fowler, "highly respected and a strong presence in major league circles, is going somewhere" -- but only "if he wants to" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/14).
