Brazil Minister Of Sport Says Country Prepared Well For Games, Downplays Concerns

Brazil Sports Minister Leonardo Picciani on Thursday "played down international concerns over the Zika virus, infrastructure delays, street crime and political upheaval, equating them with similar concerns" before the '12 London and '08 Beijing Games and "promising that the country will deliver an 'extraordinary'" Rio Games, according to Dave Sheinin of the WASHINGTON POST. Picciani said, "It’s natural that such concerns would be raised. It just goes with the territory. Despite these natural concerns, Brazil has prepared very well for these Games. We will have an extraordinary Olympic Games." Sheinin notes several athletes "already have withdrawn from consideration for the Olympics because of Zika." But Picciani said that Brazilian officials "have worked closely with the World Health Organization to combat the virus, lining up additional medical personnel and preparing an 'abundant supply' of insect repellant for the Games." He said that Rio "has hosted 43 test events at Olympic venues between" June '15 and April '16, featuring more than 7,000 athletes, and that there was "not a single verified case' of Zika reported by the athletes or their delegations" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/10).
