Blues Look To Build On Successful Season, Break Even Financially After Conference Finals

The Blues advanced to the Western Conference Finals this year, and for the first time since they opened play at Scottrade Center in '94, the team "will 'break even' financially," according to Jeremy Rutherford of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. The Blues "crept over" the $71.4M salary cap this season. Team Owner Tom Stillman said, "We will have a better year because of it. It’s not like we’re suddenly rolling in the dough, but it really helps to solidify the financial condition of the franchise. It allows us to continue to invest in our team, to spend to the cap, to provide the other things that are necessary to have a first-rate, elite, NHL hockey program." Stillman added without the playoff run this season, it would have made spending to the cap in '16-17 "harder." But he said that the ownership group "remains committed to backing the Blues financially with the big picture in mind." Meanwhile, Rutherford notes the Blues next season will be "prepping for the 50th anniversary of the franchise, along with hosting" the Winter Classic against the Blackhawks at Busch Stadium. Stillman: "I’m really proud of the job that the people on the business side of the organization did. That side has come a long way, much the way the hockey side has. That’s important because we need the business to come along and get better if the hockey side is going to be able to remain competitive and they definitely are doing that under [CEO of Business Operations Chris Zimmerman’s] leadership." More Stillman: "We’re pleased with the results on the ice, and ... we hope that it helps us further build the franchise by adding as fans some of the people that came into the fold during the playoff run" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 6/2).
