Lundquist To Leave CBS' Broadcast Booth For SEC Football Package After '16 Season

CBS' Verne Lundquist is stepping down from his lead college football role at the net following the '16 season. Lundquist, who has held that role since '00, will continue to call regular-season college basketball, the NCAA Tournament and golf, including The Masters and PGA Championship. Brad Nessler will succeed Lundquist as lead play-by-play announcer for the "SEC On CBS." Nessler will begin calling select SEC games this season in weeks where CBS airs two SEC football games, in addition to the '16 Hyundai Sun Bowl (CBS). SPORTS ON EARTH's Michael Tunison noted Lundquist has "become one of the recognizable announcers in the history of college football, and his leaving will serve as an end of an era for some" (SPORTSONEARTH.com, 5/31). In Orlando, Matt Murschel notes Lundquist’s announcement is “a moment well-deserved for someone who’s spent 53 years culminating a career in front of a television camera.” CBS Sports Chair Sean McManus said Lundquist is “one of the iconic voices in our industry and had been for decades.” McManus: "He’s inherited the mantle left by Keith Jackson as the preeminent college football broadcaster in the country. ... When you turn on a game and you hear Verne’s voice, it automatically becomes a big game” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/1). McManus added, “He’s going out on top, and everybody should be so lucky.” Nessler previously worked with analyst Gary Danielson at ESPN, and McManus said that their “established chemistry was one reason Nessler was CBS’s No. 1 choice once Lundquist decided to step down.” McManus added that hiring Nessler was the “perfect solution,” and “he expects a seamless transition” (AP, 5/31).

FROM THE TOP DOWN
: In Baton Rouge, Scott Rabalais notes SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey at the SEC's Spring Meeting yesterday "made a point to comment" about Lundquist. Sankey said, "I just want to say how much I've enjoyed watching him and getting to know him and listen to his stories. We look forward to having Brad as part of the CBS family" (Baton Rouge ADVOCATE, 6/1).
