Soft Canadian Dollar Could Impact NHL Revenue By Up To $200M This Fiscal Year

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman yesterday said the league's revenues for the FY ending June 30 might be up to $200M higher "if the Canadian dollar was still at par." Appearing on Bloomberg TV, Bettman noted revenues last year were "at a record" of nearly $4B. He said, "We may have, at least in the way we report things, slowed up a tad because of the decline in the Canadian dollar." However, he added, "I do believe there will be a revenue increase over ’15, and we continue to grow year after year and set new records, both in terms of revenues and attendance and the number of people touching our game in media” (Bloomberg TV, 5/25). The Canadian dollar has "rebounded" to US$0.76 after hitting a "13-year low" of US$0.68 in January (SPORTSNET.ca, 5/25).

NO NEED FOR CONCERN
: THE HOCKEY NEWS' Ken Campbell noted the NHL "doesn’t appear terribly worked up about the possibility of having a more crowded sports scene in Las Vegas" if it were to expand there. When asked whether the possibility of the Raiders moving to Las Vegas would impact the NHL’s plans one way or the other, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly responded, “No impact whatsoever. Doesn’t even enter the equation.” Asked whether the possibility of having another league in Las Vegas might cause the owners to reconsider Las Vegas, he said, “Doubtful.” Campbell: "And so it goes with the NHL expansion process, which has been very, very quiet as of late" (THEHOCKEYNEWS.com, 5/25).
