Congressional Report Raises Trust Issues With NFL; New Orleans Won't Bid On NFL Draft

A Congressional report that concluded the NFL tried to improperly steer concussion research funds "raises the important element of public trust" in the league, according to Andrew Brandt of THE MMQB. Stories such as these "chip away at that trust," and they also "raise questions -- whether perceived or real -- about that all-important word 'integrity.'" To be fair, the NFL has "been on a positive trajectory in the concussion and head trauma space since being chastised in congressional hearings" in '09, and its contact limitations and concussion protocol guidelines are "more stringent than all other levels of football, including NCAA and high school." Perhaps this report, as congressional hearings seven years ago, "spurs even more positive change" (MMQB.SI.com, 5/26). In San Diego, Kevin Acee asks in light of the report, "how long can we give the NFL the benefit of the doubt?" Acee: "Is there any other way to read that than the NFL is trying to influence the results of an examination of the biggest issue it faces in shaping its long-term future?" The NFL pulling its funding is "reprehensible" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/26).

BOURBON STREET: In New Orleans, Jeff Duncan reports city officials "have chosen to not enter the bidding process" for the '17 NFL Draft or any future years. Philadelphia is "considered the early favorite to host" next year's Draft, while Dallas is "expected to make a strong run" for '18. L.A. also is "expected to be a major player for future drafts once its new stadium campus is constructed in Inglewood." New Orleans officials are "hesitant to bid on the draft because the local calendar is traditionally jammed" with Jazz Fest and the PGA Tour Zurich Classic on NFL Draft weekend (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 5/26).

VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR: PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Curtis Crabtree notes the NFL at this week's owners' meeting "officially tabled a proposal" to "allow access to in-game video on the sidelines for coaches and players." NFL Competition Committee Chair and Falcons President & CEO Rich McKay said that there was "actually some push back from coaches that wanted to have more time to adapt and prepare for the change before it's officially implemented." McKay: "That is a big change. Don't underestimate that change from a coaching perspective. That's not something they're used to. So just like -- as happened to us before when we've tried to introduce things -- I think the coaches, and I don't blame them for it, I think they've put their hand up and said 'hold it, not so fast, let us just kind of digest how this change is going to impact us, how it's going to impact the way we operate on the sidelines and operate in the coaching booths upstairs'" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 5/26).
