New Washington AD Cohen Focused On Financial Stability, Fundraising In Full-Time Role

Univ. of Washington AD Jennifer Cohen, who the school formally introduced Tuesday after removing the interim tag from her title, has "spent much of the past few months working with her staff on a three-year financial-stability plan for the athletic department, and fundraising will remain her top priority," according to Adam Jude of the SEATTLE TIMES. The athletic department "reported a budget deficit of $863,136" for FY '14-15. Cohen said that there will "likely be another deficit" in the '15-16 budget. She said that some of that shortfall "can be blamed on the declining ticket sales for football." Last fall, Husky Stadium "drew an average of 61,919 fans," down from 64,508 in '14 and 68,769 in '13. There "hasn’t been a sellout at Husky Stadium" since '13, but Cohen "expects that to change this fall." A UW search committee "vetted some 20 candidates, and UW President Ana Mari Cauce said she interviewed four or five finalists." Cohen has "spent 18 years at UW, working mostly as a fundraiser." Cauce said that continuity "was an important factor in Cohen’s promotion." Cauce: "She can hit the ground running. She doesn’t have to begin to develop all those relationships. She has a plan." Cohen as part of her five-year contract will "earn $460,000 annually, with $60,000 in additional deferred payments and another $100,000 in potential bonuses." Cohen "becomes the only female athletic director in the Pac-12 and one of just three among the 65 Power Five conference schools" (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/26).

HUSKY AT HEART: In Seattle, Stephen Cohen wrote the new AD is "a Husky lifer." It became clear in her introductory remarks yesterday that what Cohen "might not possess in name recognition, she more than makes up for in passion for the program she's been with for nearly two decades." She "has stronger local ties than any Huskies AD this century." She believes her "deep roots with the program give her a unique advantage in her day-to-day work" (SEATTLEPI.com, 5/25).
