Rutgers AD Considers Home Football Game At Yankee Stadium Despite Fan, Player Gripes

Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs said that he is "open to the possibility of moving a football home game" to Yankee Stadium, according to Ryan Dunleavy of the ASBURY PARK PRESS. Hobbs: "We want to look at maybe bringing a game here and announcing that sometime down the road." Rutgers in the late '70s, '80s and '90s "often scheduled major opponents at Giants Stadium rather than on campus, but the practice ended under former coach Greg Schiano," save for a '10 game against Army at MetLife Stadium. Rutgers has "played three games at Yankee Stadium" since '11, including two games as part of the Pinstripe Bowl and one against Army in '11. But Yankee Stadium’s capacity is "almost identical to that of High Point Solutions Stadium (52,454)." Yankee Stadium was supposed to host Rutgers-Army again last season, "but the game was moved to West Point" (ASBURY PARK PRESS, 5/26). Hobbs: "(The Yankees) want to work more closely with us. ... The Yankees see Rutgers is starting to move forward and is a good story so they want to be part of it, too." In Newark, Dan Duggan notes Rutgers fans "voiced strong opposition to moving a home game to Yankee Stadium when the topic surfaced two years ago." Players have "criticized the playing surface at the stadium, as the turf tends to tear up and become slippery." Hobbs, who yesterday threw out the first pitch prior to Blue Jays-Yankees alongside football coach Chris Ash, "didn't mention any specific potential opponent for a Yankee Stadium game" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 5/26).
