Univ. Of North Texas In Line To Be Exclusive Higher Ed Sponsor Of Cowboys

The Univ. of North Texas "may soon become an exclusive higher education sponsor" of the Cowboys with an "unusual deal that would include sponsorship opportunities and provide student internships" at the team’s HQ, according to Matthew Watkins of the TEXAS TRIBUNE. The UNT System Board of Regents on Thursday and Friday is "expected to hold a meeting at which it will consider delegating authority to negotiate the details." No price tag "has been made public." But a memo containing the framework for the arrangement stated that the cost "is expected to be of 'sufficient size,' to require" the BOR to sign off. UNT System rules state that the board "must approve of contracts" worth $1M or more. Briefing materials for the upcoming meeting stated that the agreement would allow UNT to advertise at AT&T Stadium, plus the Cowboys' "soon-to-open practice facility and team headquarters in Frisco." UNT "might also advertise on the radio during Cowboys games, on the team’s website and on billboards." Additionally, UNT students may get "internships from the deal." The agreement "would last multiple years, though its exact length wasn't disclosed" (TEXAS TRIBUNE, 5/17). The deal would mean UNT "could say they are a 'proud partner of the Dallas Cowboys' and use the team’s logo" (DENTONRC.com, 5/16).
