Sponsors Activating Around Warriors' Curry Following Second Consecutive MVP Award

Warriors G Stephen Curry yesterday won his second consecutive MVP award by a unanimous vote, the first player in NBA history to do so, and starting at 6:00pm ET tomorrow, "NBA 2K16" and Under Armour are "teaming up" to allow players to "download a roster update that will make video-game Curry an even better shooter -- his rating will be maxed out at 99 for 30 hours, in a reference to his jersey number," according to Tim Nudd of ADWEEK. Under Armour and Droga5, N.Y., to "promote the stunt" created an ad in which video-game Curry is "shocked at what real-life Curry can do on the court." Droga5 said that it wanted to go "beyond an MVP celebration and instead create an experience that fans could enjoy" (ADWEEK.com, 5/10). CREATIVITY-ONLINE's Ann-Christine Diaz wrote to "see the change, players will need to download a roster update, which will also unlock a new MVP colorway of the Under Armour Curry Two shoe" (CREATIVITY-ONLINE.com, 5/10).

SOLD OUT: In Baltimore, Lorraine Mirabella noted UA after Curry won MVP "launched and sold out of limited edition Curry basketball shoes." By early afternoon, the Curry MVP Back 2 Back Pack, "including shoes Curry wore in each MVP season, sold out at $400 each in pre-orders online." UA said that it is "celebrating 'Stephen's outstanding achievement' with the commemorative footwear and a men's Back 2 Back MVP SC T-shirt for $35." UA is also "planning to make the MVP shoe pack available again this summer." The two-pair bundle, "including a re-release of the Curry One MVP and a new Curry Two MVP, will go on sale June 24 at UA Brand Houses and some retailers" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 5/10). Harman Int'l Industries, the parent company of JBL audio, congratulated Curry with a GIF posted on social media, while Kaiser Permanente will run out-of-home ads in the Bay Area (NBA).

ARMOUR ALL: MASHABLE's Sam Laird wrote Curry's MVP award "represents something more," as pro athletes endorsed by UA are "on an insane hot streak." Panthers QB Cam Newton won MVP in '15; Nationals RF Bryce Harper won NL MVP in '15; Jordan Spieth won the '15 Masters and U.S. Open; Dodgers P Clayton Kershaw won NL MVP in '14; and Patriots QB Tom Brady won his fourth Super Bowl in '15. Those are the "big names," and they are "some BIG names -- among the biggest and most successful in pro sports right now." UA is "positioned to ride these horses for several years" (MASHABLE.com, 5/10).
